All Lanes of Southbound I-5 Reopen Following Train Derailment

The Washington State Department of Transportation reports that all lanes of southbound I-5 at Mounts Road (milepost 116) have reopened to traffic. Crews were able to complete remaining work activities that required a right lane closure ahead of schedule. The Mounts Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 has also reopened. There are no remaining closures following the Monday train derailment.

Traffic is moving once again on southbound Interstate 5 south of the city of DuPont following a train derailment that blocked all lanes earlier this week.

Additional nighttime work

The right lane of southbound I-5, and the southbound Mounts Road on-ramp will remain closed overnight while WSDOT maintenance crews continue emergency guardrail repair and slope restoration work. Crews expect this work to be finished in time to completely reopen the lane and ramp for the Thursday morning commute. Nighttime travelers should reduce their speed to 45 mph through the area for the safety of the crews along the road.

Best, Worst Times to Travel This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and this year traffic may prove to be a record breaker.

Traveling I-5 can be a real pain with heavy traffic and plenty of short tempers. Here are a few tips to help make your Thanksgiving holiday voyage less stressful:

Getting There:

  • The absolute worst time to get on the road is the day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday, November 22) and if you leave in mid-afternoon (3:00 p.m.) you definitely won’t be a happy camper once you get there.
  • If you have no choice but to leave on Wednesday, make it as early as possible. Start you trip no later than 6:00 a.m. to avoid traffic delays.
  • The Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 19) is the best day to leave for your Thanksgiving road trip, the earlier, the better.
  • Thanksgiving morning is also a good time to leave, the earlier , the better.

Returning Home:

  • The day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 24) before 6:00 a.m. is the best day and time to return from your Thanksgiving trip.
  • Saturday and Sunday (November 25 and 26) late afternoon are the worst days and times to return from your Thanksgiving road trip. Avoid being on the road between 11:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m. Traffic will be heavy during those times.
  • If you have no choice but to leave on Saturday, try leaving as early as possible (before 6 a.m.) to avoid traffic delays.

Depending on where you’re heading, and how long the trip will be, you might be able to schedule the time when you are on the road to at avoid the worst of it.

Adjust your schedule or route and consider these options:

  • Take a bypass route around large cities
  • Tune to a radio station and monitor the traffic reports
  • If you have mobile access, Use live-traffic-reports.com to monitor traffic
  • Stop at a rest area if headed into heavy traffic and wait until the worst of it has subsided
  • Avoid shopping districts (Black Friday is usually gridlocked around major shopping areas)

Drive responsibly and have a safe trip!

Coming Soon: New Northbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge Opens to Ramp Traffic

Contractor crews building a new northbound Interstate 5 Puyallup River Bridge in Tacoma are preparing to enter the next phase of construction that will move ramp traffic onto the bridge.

Weather permitting, as early as the weekend of Oct. 20, a new 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will open to traffic. Drivers who use this on-ramp will cross the new Puyallup River Bridge prior to merging with mainline I-5 traffic.

In addition, drivers on northbound I-5 heading to the Port of Tacoma Road (exit 136B) and East 20th Street (exit 136A) will exit the mainline before the river and cross the new Puyallup River Bridge to reach the interchange. The new off-ramp is approximately a half mile south of the current exit. Crews will implement this change during the same weekend.

“We know there will be an adjustment for drivers exiting to the Port of Tacoma Road or East 20th Street, and we appreciate their patience during this transition,” said WSDOT project manager Brenden Clarke. “Opening the new bridge to ramp traffic marks a milestone for this project.”

Once the ramp traffic is on the new bridge, crews will begin building lanes to match the new alignment of northbound I-5 leading up to the new bridge. If weather cooperates, all northbound I-5 traffic could be using the new bridge as soon as spring 2018.

Expect Delays. Five Straight Weekends of I-5 Lane Restrictions in SeaTac

The Washington State Department of Transportation reports five straight weekends of northbound I-5 lane reductions in SeaTac have begun.

I-5 travelers should expect backups and delays on northbound Interstate 5 through SeaTac and Kent each of the next five weekends.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have reduced northbound I-5 to two lanes during the first of five consecutive weekends. During the lane closures, crews will repave northbound I-5 between State Route 516 and the Southcenter area. Similar work during the weekend of June 3-4 resulted in backups of up to 6 miles.

“Drivers need to use alternatives, or be prepared for long delays,” said WSDOT Traffic Engineer Mike Swires. “We’ve already seen up to hour-long delays during the weekend in this area for this project. Travelers should use transit, take alternate routes, or delay or postpone their trips on northbound I-5 in the Kent-SeaTac area.”

Crews will also close the SR 516 on-ramps to northbound I-5 and the South 200th Street on- and off-ramps throughout the weekend. Drivers need to watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone in the left lanes.

All work is weather-dependent. If the weather holds, WSDOT expects to finish the work during the July 14–17 lane reductions.

I-5 Ramp Closures, Detours, Traffic Delays in Pierce County Washington

The Washington Department of Transportation reports the following traffic impacts on Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome between M St. to Portland Ave. from milepost 132.8 to 135.2, and northbound I-5 between East Portland Avenue and Port of Tacoma Road.

These projects lay the foundation for new HOV lanes on I-5 in Tacoma and northbound into Fife.

Weekend closure slated for busy Portland Avenue intersection in Tacoma
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for a full weekend closure of a busy Tacoma intersection and a northbound Interstate 5 exit.

From at 11 p.m. Friday, July 29 through 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, the intersection of Portland Avenue and East 28th Street and the northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue will close to traffic. The closures allow contractor crews to finish rebuilding the intersection, which involves regrading and paving.

Drivers can expect additional congestion while traffic is detoured around the intersection and off-ramp. The work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled.

Summer reroute for exit

Drivers headed to the 26th Street/Tacoma Dome exit from the northbound I-5 collector/distributor will instead be detoured to southbound State Route 7, to 38th Street, and loop around back to northbound SR 7.

Drivers using the northbound I-5 collector/distributor to I-705 will be allowed to continue to downtown Tacoma, however they will not be able to reach the 26th Street exit. Drivers using the SR 7 ramp will be able to exit to 26th Street/Tacoma Dome and continue to northbound I-705. The temporary configuration will remain in effect through September.

Crews are creating an access point from which to excavate a concrete-lined vault full of soil contaminated with petroleum products left from original Interstate 705 construction.

Lane closures:

  • 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Friday, July 29 – All southbound lanes of I-5 will detour via Exit # 133/City Center and Interstate 705.
  • Drivers can expect weeknight single- and double-lane closures panned for both directions of I-5 between M Street and Port of Tacoma Road.
