Olympia Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers

Avoid the Friday afternoon/evening southbound crawl: The stretch from Joint Base Lewis-McChord through Olympia becomes a parking lot on Friday afternoons (3-7pm) as JBLM military personnel head out for the weekend. Plan accordingly or take a long dinner break.

The left lane ends WITHOUT WARNING at exit 111 (southbound): This merge catches thousands of drivers off-guard. The left lane suddenly becomes exit-only for Port of Olympia. Stay in the right two lanes if continuing on I-5 south.

The Nisqually earthquake zone means bumpy pavement: The road surface through Thurston County takes a beating from the geological activity and heavy truck traffic. It's legitimately rough in patches—not your imagination.

Washington State Patrol is VERY active around exits 99-114: This corridor is heavily patrolled, especially the 70mph zone north of Olympia. Locals know WSP loves the median crossovers here. Cruise control at 74mph max.
