Expect Delays for Nighttime Construction on I-5 in Sacramento Area

The California Department of Transportation is alerting motorists to be prepared for nighttime construction work as emergency pavement repairs are made for the northbound and southbound directions on Interstate 5 between Elk Grove and South Sacramento.

From south of Cosumnes River Boulevard to Pocket Road Caltrans contractors will begin lane closures on Sunday, February 4 through Thursday, February 8 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the northbound direction and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the southbound direction.

Motorists are advised to prepare for traffic congestion and are encouraged to plan ahead for possible delays. Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work.

The California Department of Transportation encourages motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert”, to “Slow for the Cone Zone” and “Move Over” whenever it is safe to do so when amber or flashing lights indicate the presence of highway workers or emergency personnel on the roadway.

Roadwork with Detour on Northbound I-5 at Sacramento International Airport

The California Department of Transportation announced that a project on northbound Interstate 5 to lengthen the auxiliary lane and exit ramp to the Sacramento International Airport will begin on Tuesday, April 19 and last approximately 30 days, weather permitting.

To accommodate construction, lane restrictions on northbound I-5 approaching the airport will be from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.  Crews plan to close the northbound I-5 exit to the airport from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on April 19, 20 and 21, requiring motorists to follow a six-mile detour during the overnight work.

The detour route:

  • Continue northbound past the airport and over the Sacramento River and take Exit No. 531.
  • Take Old River Road under the freeway to County Road 118, merging onto southbound I-5.
  • Continue south on I-5 and take Exit No. 528 to the airport.

Caltrans urges motorists trying to make their flights to add 30-35 minutes additional travel time. Daytime work will continue behind k-rail, but additional delays are expected due to construction traffic travelling in and out of the work zone.

The $1.1 million I-5 project will lengthen the exit ramp and auxiliary lane about 1,800 feet to add capacity and help lessen traffic backing up onto the freeway. DeSilva Gates Construction in Sacramento has been hired for the work.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work.

Nighttime Lane Closures Scheduled for I-5 in South Sacramento

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting the motoring public of lane closures on Interstate 5 in south Sacramento scheduled for Sunday (January 3) and Monday (January 4) nights.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday the #1 and #2 southbound lanes of I-5 at Seamas Avenue will be closed to grind about 250 feet of the roadway. After that work is completed, the #3 and #4 lanes and the southbound Seamas Avenue off-ramp will be closed. All the work should be finished by 10 a.m.

The same operation will be performed on the northbound lanes on Monday night beginning at 9 p.m. and that work is scheduled to be completed by 5 a.m.

Caltrans recently performed skid testing on the interstate before, on and after the Seamas Avenue undercrossing and discovered that traction has lessened over the last several years due to wear and tear from heavy traffic. Grinding, in which the roadway is roughened up by diamond cutters, is expected to significantly improve the friction on the road surface.

Weather or other unexpected events may delay the work.
