The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced that the I-5 Exit 24 connection to Oregon 99 will be closed from 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept 28. The construction work is needed for the Fern Valley Interchange project, scheduled for completion in 2016.
“The Luman/Fern Valley Road intersection, located next to the Bear Creek Bridge, must be raised about 2 feet to match the new road elevation,” said ODOT Project Manager Tim Fletcher. “The long weekend of work reduces impacts to traffic and nearby businesses.”
The Interstate 5 exit 24 ramps will remain open. However, people wanting to access businesses west of I-5 will need to use Oregon 99. Advance signage will direct I-5 traffic to use either the South Medford Exit 27 or the Talent Exit 21 to reach Phoenix.
ODOT is contacted businesses on the west side of I-5 exit 24 to explain the construction staging and how access is available using Oregon 99.
“After Sept. 25-28, we’ll have another full weekend of work planned for later,” said Fletcher. “We haven’t set the date yet but the work will involve adding a new wearing surface of concrete to the intersection.”
The $72 million Fern Valley Interchange project began in spring 2014. Due to its size and complexity — encompassing east and west Phoenix roadways, I-5 and Oregon 99 — the project requires more than two full construction seasons for completion.
