The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is continuing work on the Battle Creek Road Bridge as part of their I-5 widening project in south Salem. This work will require nighttime lane closures and three nights of full I-5 closures with signed detours.

Plan for I-5 Lane Closures January 8

ODOT is bringing in large cranes to set the beams that support the bridge’s driving surface. What to expect the night of January 8: The right lane of north and southbound I-5 will close near milepost 250 at Battle Creek Road. Lane closures begin at 9:00 p.m. and reopen at 5:00 a.m. on January 9. Only one lane to remain open in each direction. Crews will be working overnight. There will be construction noise and delays.

Expect Full I-5 Closures January 12-14

Once the large cranes and other equipment are in place, ODOT will start setting the bridge beams. To keep motorists and construction workers safe, both directions of I-5 will close for three nights.

What to Expect January 12-14:

  • North and southbound I-5 to close between Exit 248 and Exit 252.
  • Closure in place from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each night.
  • All I-5 traffic to detour onto Commercial Street SE and Kuebler Boulevard.
  • Construction noise and delays.

The schedule may change due to weather and construction needs.

Northbound I-5 Detour

To get around the closure, travelers should follow the signed detour:

  • Exit to Commercial Street SE.
  • Right on Kuebler Boulevard.
  • Back onto northbound I-5.

Southbound I-5 Detour

To get around the closure, travelers should follow the signed detour:

  • Take Exit 252 and turn right onto Kuebler Boulevard.
  • Left on Commercial Street SE.
  • Back onto southbound I-5.

If you’re traveling through the area now, you can expect:

  • Construction noise and delays.
  • Crews working during the day and at night.
  • Lane, shoulder and ramp closures as needed.
  • 55 mph speed limit in the work zone.
