The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has initiated targeted replacement of deteriorated concrete panels along a critical segment of I-5 between Vancouver and Woodland. Effective September 14, contractors will systematically replace the most severely compromised panels in both directions from Northeast 179th Street to just south of Woodland near the North Fork Lewis River Bridge. These interventions will substantially improve ride quality and establish a robust structural foundation for subsequent project phases.
More pavement improvements ahead on I-5
Earlier this year, work began on concrete pavement rehabilitation across a 2.2-mile section of I-5 extending from Northeast 179th Street to the I-5/I-205 interchange. Employing the proven crack, seat, and overlay methodology, the contractor fractured the existing concrete, compacted it into a stable base, and applied a new asphalt overlay. The scope further encompasses removal of temporary rough-road signage, installation of updated signage and guardrail systems, and drainage enhancements designed to mitigate moisture-induced deterioration. Completion is scheduled for the end of September.
In May 2027, construction teams will return to fully reconstruct approximately four miles of southbound I-5 between Northeast 179th Street and Pioneer Street, again utilizing the crack, seat, and overlay technique. This $25 million investment leverages the current panel replacements as the essential base layer to deliver a high-performance, durable asphalt roadway engineered for extended service life under heavy traffic loads.
Collectively, these three integrated initiatives will upgrade more than six miles of I-5 in Clark County. Through deliberate multi-season sequencing, WSDOT is addressing the highest-priority deficiencies while methodically preparing the corridor for comprehensive, long-term pavement improvements that will provide motorists with a smoother, more reliable, and resilient travel experience through southwest Washington.
