Lane Closures, Traffic Delays for I-5 Work in Washington This Week

The Washington State Department of Transportation reports the following traffic impacts associated with the Tacoma/Pierce County I-5 HOV construction project.

All closures listed below are subject to change due to weather.

Monday, December 23

  • Northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue will close from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.
  • One lane of northbound I-5 from McKinley Way to Port of Tacoma Road will close from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Thursday, January 2

  • Northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue will close from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Friday.
  • One lane of northbound I-5 from McKinley Way to Port of Tacoma Road will close from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Friday, January 3

  • Northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue will close from 11:59 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Saturday.
  • One lane of northbound I-5 from McKinley Way to Port of Tacoma Road will close from 10:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Why are these closures necessary?

  • On I-5 between Port of Tacoma Road and East L Street, contractor crews are building a new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge, widening I-5 and replacing the East L Street overpass.
  • Contractor crews are finishing a project that built new direct connect HOV lanes between SR 16 and I-5 in Tacoma. Those lanes are now open.
