The Oregon Department of Transportation reports that both spans of the I-5 Interstate Bridge will see intermittent night lifts lasting as long as 25 minutes on three nights, July 16-18, while ODOT crews oil six miles of bridge cable.

During lifts, the sidewalks will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The intermittent lifts will begin at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 16 and continue until 7:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17.  The schedule will repeat starting at 10:00 p.m. Saturday, July 17 and again at 10:00 p.m. Sunday, July 18.

During the lifts, southbound travelers may take SR 14 east to Interstate 205 and the Glenn Jackson Bridge south to Oregon. Northbound travelers may take Interstate 84 east to I-205 north into Washington.

Crews will apply oil to six miles of cable used in bridge lifts. The work takes place every summer as part of the annual bridge maintenance, with 16 to 18 lifts needed to complete the process. The work is necessary to keep the bridge in good working condition.

Additional night closures will be needed later this summer to apply grease to the cables, completing the cable maintenance work for the year.

The maintenance is part of ODOT’s effort to preserve and maintain Oregon’s transportation system.

The Interstate Bridge is jointly owned by Oregon and Washington and is operated and maintained by ODOT. The northbound span opened in 1917 and the southbound span in 1958.
