I-5 travelers passing through Southwest Oregon next week should be aware of several construction projects that may impact their trip.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports the following work on Interstate 5 that will be in place Sunday, May 11 through Saturday, May 17, 2025. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
I-5, MP 109-111, Boomer Hill weigh station repair
This project will replace the northbound and southbound weigh in motion sensors for the Boomer Hill weigh stations. All work is scheduled for completion by June 30.
Starting the week of May 11-17, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures in both directions.
I-5, MP 148.2, Bridge over Rice Hill Frontage Road
This project will repair the I-5 bridge over Rice Hill Frontage Road at Exit 148 (Rice Hill). Construction involves replacing damaged areas of the bridge deck in the northbound and southbound fast (left) lanes. All work is scheduled for completion by Memorial Day weekend.
Watch for lane closures in both directions of I-5 as construction shifts from the northbound side to southbound. Watch for workers placing concrete barrier. Drivers should expect congestion and drive with caution.
The southbound Exit 148 on-ramp is scheduled to be closed through the middle of May. During the ramp closure, drivers in Rice Hill can take I-5 north from Exit 148 to Exit 150 (Yoncalla), then turn around to reach the southbound lanes.
On Rice Hill Frontage Road, flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Expect delays under 20 minutes.
I-5, Exit 71, Bridge repair at Sunny Valley interchange
This project will repair the I-5 bridges at Exit 71 (Sunny Valley). All work is scheduled for completion by June 6.
The northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp at Exit 71 are expected to remain closed until the week of May 11-17. Travelers should plan to detour and budget extra time for their commutes. Watch for roadside message boards for the latest information on ramp closures.
During the ramp closures, northbound traffic will access Sunny Valley by continuing north to Exit 76 (Wolf Creek), then returning south on I-5 to Exit 71. Drivers planning to travel south on I-5 from Sunny Valley will detour by traveling north to Exit 76, then taking southbound I-5. Each detour is approximately 10 miles. Travelers are cautioned to avoid using local roads as a detour during the ramp closures. Secondary roads are not suitable for heavy traffic and commercial motor vehicles.
Once the exit ramps have reopened, watch for workers remaining in the area to complete the bridge deck project. Drive with caution and watch your speed in the work zone.
