The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports that they have finished building the center portion of the new I-5 bridge over Ehlen Road (exit 278). For work to continue, they need to move northbound I-5 traffic onto the new bridge.
I-5 Traffic is Shifting August 23
Crews will connect the center portion of the new bridge to the northbound I-5 lanes and apply temporary striping. ODOT will use rolling slowdowns to help shift traffic away from the work zone, allowing our crews to work safely.
Please use caution, be patient, watch for workers and follow the directions on the signs.
Here’s what you can expect if you’re driving on northbound I-5:
- Starting with the fast lane around 8:00 p.m., ODOT will be closing lanes and shifting traffic to the right, eventually leading drivers to use the Exit 278 off-ramp.
- A flagger will direct traffic at the Ehlen Road NE and ramp intersection.
- Traffic will continue back onto I-5 using the on-ramp.
- ODOT plans to finish shifting northbound traffic onto the new bridge and reopen the on and off-ramps by 8:00 a.m. on August 24.
Southbound I-5 traffic will be unaffected in the work zone. Please slow down to the posted 55 mph speed limit and watch for our crews.
Keep work crews safe – slow down in the work zone
Construction equipment is moving in and out of the area, often using the far left lane – avoid using this in the work zone.
Other impacts you can expect:
- Crews working daily, Sunday through Thursday with occasional night and weekend work. Up to two lanes closed nightly in either direction on I-5 as needed from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
- Other roads in the project area to have single lane closures as needed from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
- Reduced speed to 55 mph in the I-5 work zone.
- Construction noise and delays.
- No lane changes allowed where there are double white lines.
Use caution as you drive through the work zone, there are grooves in the pavement along the median shoulder.
