I-5 travelers who need to take a break from the road will soon have access to more amenities at the southbound Interstate 5 Gee Creek Rest Area located south of Ridgefield, Washington.

Beginning Monday, June 3, the Washington State Department of Transportation’s contractor will start work to improve and upgrade the popular stopping spot. Work will be complete this fall.

“These improvements will benefit folks who visit the Gee Creek Rest Area for years to come,” said WSDOT Capital Facilities Project Manager Sam Leiren. “With this $2.2 million project we’re adding a second RV dump station and additional RV parking, which will help reduce congestion in the rest area.”

Other work includes added lighting, sidewalk and pavement improvements. The rest area provides travelers with a safe and convenient spot to take a break before continuing their journey, and is among the busiest in the state, with approximately 800,000 annual visitors, a figure calculated by the number of toilet flushes.

What to expect during construction

  • Beginning at 6:00 a.m. Monday, June 3, until 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, crews will close the rest area to fell trees in preparation for improvement work.
  • During construction, additional closures of the Gee Creek Rest Area may be needed, along with a temporary shutdown of the existing RV dump station.
  • Travelers will also experience congestion within the rest area, until construction is complete.
