Seattle Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Timing is Everything: Avoid driving through between 7-9:30 AM and 3:30-7 PM on weekdays if possible. Seattle's traffic is notoriously bad, and I-5 can become a parking lot. Even weekends see heavy congestion midday. Very early morning or late evening are your best bets.
The Express Lanes Reverse: The center express lanes on I-5 change direction based on time of day (southbound during morning rush, northbound during evening). Pay attention to the overhead signs with green arrows/red X's—going the wrong way is dangerous and happens to confused drivers.
Stay in Middle Lanes Through Downtown: The right lanes frequently become exit-only with little warning, especially through the downtown corridor. The left lane can also be HOV-restricted during rush hours. Middle lanes are usually your safest bet for through traffic.
The I-5/I-90 Split Backs Up: The interchange where I-90 meets I-5 (near downtown) creates major bottlenecks in both directions. If you're not exiting, get left well in advance. Southbound, the express lanes end here and merge back, causing sudden congestion.
