Bellingham Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Fill up before the border: If you're heading north to Canada, gas prices jump significantly once you cross. Bellingham has the last cheap(er) US fuel stations. Costco off Meridian St is popular but can have lines.
Border wait times are unpredictable: The Peace Arch/Douglas crossing can vary from 15 minutes to 3+ hours. Check wait times online before committing. The Pacific Highway crossing (Truck crossing) is often faster for regular vehicles too, despite the name.
The Bakerview/Slater Road exit confusion: Exits 255-258 near Bellingham can be confusing with multiple options for similar destinations. If heading to downtown or ferry terminal (Alaska/San Juan Islands), take exit 253 (Lakeway Drive).
Chuckanut Drive detour (if you have time): Exit 231 onto Highway 11/Chuckanut Drive is a stunning alternative to I-5 that hugs the coastline south of Bellingham. Rejoin I-5 in Burlington. Add 30 minutes but worth it for scenery and stops like Taylor Shellfish Farms.
