Salem Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers

Time Your Drive Around State Workers: Salem is the state capital, so avoid passing through 7:30-9 AM and 4:30-6 PM on weekdays when possible. Traffic gets surprisingly heavy for a mid-sized city.

Skip the Main Exit Congestion: Exit 253 (Market St) gets backed up, especially during rush hours. If you need gas/food, use Exit 256 (Kuebler Blvd) instead - it's less crowded with plenty of options and easier to get back on the freeway.

Watch for the Speed Trap Zone: The stretch between exits 248-253 is heavily patrolled, and the limit drops from 65 to 55 mph. Oregon State Police are particularly active here, especially southbound.

Know Your Rest Stop Options: The Ankeny Hill Rest Area (northbound, milepost 243) is one of the nicest in Oregon - clean facilities and good security. Southbound travelers don't get a rest area for a while, so plan accordingly.
