Tacoma Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Timing is Everything for the Bridge: The I-5 corridor through Tacoma, especially near the Tacoma Dome and across the bridges, gets brutally congested during rush hours (7-9 AM and 3-6 PM). If possible, pass through mid-morning or early afternoon. Weekend traffic is usually much lighter.
Stay Left Through the Split: I-5 splits into I-705 (which goes downtown) around the Tacoma Dome area. If you're just passing through, stay right to continue on I-5. The signage can be confusing, and many travelers accidentally exit.
Watch Your Speed on the Bridges: WSP (Washington State Patrol) heavily monitors the Tacoma Narrows Bridge approaches and the elevated sections. Speed limits drop suddenly, and enforcement is strict.
The "Aroma" is Real: You'll likely smell the Tacoma paper mills and industrial waterfront. Locals call it the "Aroma of Tacoma." It's stronger on humid days and usually hits between the Puyallup River and downtown. Don't worry—it passes quickly.
