Portland Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Time it right or pay the price: Avoid I-5 through Portland 7-9am and 4-7pm on weekdays if possible. The stretch through downtown and across the bridges backs up brutally. Even weekends can be rough near IKEA (southbound).
The bridge shuffle: You'll cross the Columbia River into Oregon on I-5. Stay alert: traffic suddenly shifts from left-lane-fast (Washington style) to right-lane-fast as you enter Oregon. Oregon drivers camp in the left lane more than Washingtonians.
The I-405 bypass option: If downtown I-5 is jammed, take I-405 west (splits around exit 302B). It loops around downtown and rejoins I-5. Adds 2 miles but can save 20+ minutes during peak times.
Construction is eternal: There's always construction somewhere on Portland's I-5. The Rose Quarter area (exits 300-302) is particularly notorious. Lane shifts happen with little warning—stay alert and avoid distracted driving through this section.
