Modesto Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
You're Actually West of Modesto: I-5 runs about 15-20 miles west of Modesto proper. Don't expect to see the city from the highway. If you need actual Modesto amenities, take CA-99 instead or exit east onto CA-132 or CA-120.
The Cattle Feedlot Smell: Brace yourself around the Harris Ranch area (though that's further south) and near Turlock. The Central Valley's massive dairy operations create a distinctive odor, especially in hot weather. Close your vents if needed.
Limited Services on This Stretch: Gas stations and food options are sparse between major Interstate 5 exits. Fill up at Westley (CA-33) or Patterson (CA-33/Del Puerto Canyon Road). Don't wait until you're running on fumes.
Fog Season is Serious (Nov-Feb): "Tule fog" can reduce visibility to near-zero in minutes. If you hit thick fog, slow way down, use low beams (not high), and consider pulling off completely. This area has major pile-ups nearly every winter.
