Grants Pass Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Watch for speed traps on the I-5 corridor: The stretch through Josephine County is notorious for aggressive speed enforcement, especially near exits 55-61. Set cruise control and stay alert—local police and Oregon State Police actively patrol this area.
Winter chain-up reality: If traveling in winter, the grade south toward the Siskiyou Summit (into California) can close quickly. Even if Grants Pass looks clear, check the weather before continuing south—you're only 30 minutes from serious mountain passes.
Skip the freeway gas stations: Exit into town for significantly cheaper fuel. The truck stops right off I-5 charge a premium. Downtown stations or those on 6th/7th Street are usually 20-30 cents cheaper per gallon.
Bathroom break tip: The rest area about 8 miles north (milepost 88) is one of Oregon's nicest and rarely crowded. Much better option than the busy truck stops at the Grants Pass exits.
