Vancouver Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-5 Travelers
Bridge Traffic Timing: The I-5 Bridge over the Columbia River is a notorious bottleneck. Avoid crossing between 7-9 AM and 4-6:30 PM on weekdays if possible. Southbound backups can extend for miles into Washington during evening rush hour.
Speed Trap Zones: Washington State Patrol is very active on the stretch between the bridge and Woodland. The speed limit drops from 60 to 50 mph in certain areas—locals know to watch carefully for changes, especially near the truck scales.
No Sales Tax Advantage: Many Oregonians shop in Vancouver to avoid Oregon's lack of sales tax on goods (Washington has no income tax). If you need gas, wait until you cross into Oregon—it's typically cheaper AND they pump it for you by law.
Last Good Stop: The Salmon Creek rest area (northbound) or Ridgefield exit has the last convenient services before a long stretch. Stock up on snacks/fuel if heading north toward Olympia.
