Winter weather like snow, sleet, or ice can create very risky road conditions. Each year, hundreds of fatal traffic accidents happen, along with tens of thousands of crashes causing injuries during snowy or sleety weather. Getting ready for winter conditions is crucial for both you and your vehicle.
Driving in Winter Weather
Learn The Basics
Drive slower. Itโs tougher to control or stop your vehicle on slippery or snow-covered roads. Every year, thousands of traffic crashes are reported by police during snowy or sleety conditions. Increase your following distance on the road to ensure you have enough time to stop safely behind other vehicles.
Avoid driving too close to or alongside a snow plow. These trucks move slowly, take wide turns, stop frequently, cover multiple lanes, and frequently leave the road. If youโre behind a snow plow, keep a safe distance and be cautious if you decide to pass it.
Let your car be seen! Put bright markers on the antenna, windows or pavement.
Know What to Do in an Emergency
In wintry weather, if your car is stopped or stalled, keep your attention on yourself, your passengers, your vehicle, and the surroundings.
Stay with your car and donโt overexert yourself.ย
Let your car be seen. Put bright markers on the antenna, windows or pavement and keep the interior dome light on.ย
Be mindful of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of any snow and run your car only sporadically โ just long enough to stay warm. Donโt run your car for long periods of time with the windows up or in an enclosed space.
Changes You May Notice
Check Your Tires
As temperatures fall, tire pressure decreases too. Check each tire to ensure itโs inflated to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. You can find this information in your ownerโs manual or on a label on the driverโs side door frame. Avoid inflating your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself, as that number represents the maximum pressure the tire can handle, not necessarily whatโs best for your vehicle.
Always check your tires for proper inflation, damage or other conditions that may need attention.
Some other tips:
Inspect your tires at least once a month and before long road trips. ย
Itโs best to check the tires when theyโre cold, meaning that they have not been driven on for at least three hours. ย
Check each tireโs age. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years regardless of use.ย
An inspection is not just about checking tire pressure and age.ย
Remember to check:
for any damage or conditions that may need attention;ย
the tread and sidewalls for any cuts, punctures, bulges, scrapes, cracks, or bumps. The tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch or greater on all tires; andย
your spare tire. ย ย
If you find tire damage, take your vehicle to a tire service professional.
Consider installing snow tires, but before buying new tires, visit NHTSAโs Tires page to review tire safety ratings. The Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQGS) lets you compare tire treadwear, traction performance, and temperature resistance.
Inspect Your Car Seats
In colder weather, parents typically dress their children in winter coats. But itโs important to know that heavy coats can interfere with the proper harness fit on a child in a car seat. When your child will be secured in a car seat, pick thin, warm layers, and place blankets or coats around your child after the harness is snug and secure for extra warmth.
Make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed and that any children riding with you are in the right seat for their ages and sizes
Also, make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed and that any children riding with you are in the right seat for their ages and sizes. See NHTSAโs child passenger safety recommendations to find the right seat for your childโs age and size. You can visit NHTSAโs Child Car Seat Inspection Station Locator to find a free car seat inspection site near you, or to get information on virtual inspections.
Check Your Battery
When it gets cold, batteries lose power. Gasoline and diesel engines require more battery power to start, and electric and hybrid-electric vehicles may see reduced driving range. Itโs wise to have a mechanic inspect your battery, charging system, belts, and address any necessary repairs or replacements.
Have a mechanic inspect your battery, charging system, belts, and address any necessary repairs or replacements.
Learn About Your Vehicleโs Safety Technologies
Learn about the safety features in your vehicle and how they work in winter conditions. Find out if your vehicle is equipped with an antilock brake system and understand how to use it correctly. Antilock brakes help prevent your wheels from locking up when you brake. If you have antilock brakes, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. Without antilock brakes, you may need to pump the brakes if your wheels begin to lock up. Visit NHTSA.gov/DriverAssistTech for more on driver assistance technologies.
Floor Mat Basics
In slushy winter weather, think about using thicker or rubber floor mats instead of your regular ones. Poorly installed mats could get in the way of your accelerator or brake pedals, which could lead to accidents. Follow the manufacturerโs guidelines for installing mats and use retention clips to keep them secure. Make sure to use mats that are the right size and fit for your vehicle.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Check All your Vehicleโs Lights
Check your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights. Be sure to also check your trailer brake lights and turn signals, if necessary.
Does Your Windshield Wiper System Need Attention?
You can quickly go through a lot of windshield wiper fluid in a single snowstorm. Make sure your vehicleโs reservoir is full of high-quality โwinterโ fluid with de-icer before winter weather hits. Make sure defrosters and all windshield wipers work and replace any worn blades. Consider installing heavy-duty winter wipers if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow and ice.
Make sure your vehicleโs windshield washer reservoir is full of high-quality โwinterโ fluid with de-icer before winter weather hits
Inspect Your Cooling System
Make sure you have enough coolant in your vehicle, and that it meets the manufacturerโs specifications. See your vehicle ownerโs manual for recommendations. Check the cooling system for leaks, test the coolant, and drain or replace the old coolant.
You may also want to visit your mechanic for a tune-up and ask them to check for leaks, badly worn hoses, or other needed parts, repairs, and replacements.
Before You Go
Stock Your Vehicle
Carry items in your vehicle to handle common winter driving-related tasks, and supplies you might need in an emergency, including:
a snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper;ย
abrasive material (sand or kitty litter), in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow;ย
jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices (flares and emergency markers);ย
a cell phone and charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine.
Gas Up or Plug It In
Keep your gas tank close to full whenever possible.
Similarly, in the case for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, it is important keep your battery charged and to also minimize the drain on the battery. In general, batteries with liquid electrolyte have reduced energy storage and delivery capabilities at lower temperatures, which is why most all vehicle batteries use battery power for self-heating in low temperatures. The battery drain due to heating can be minimized by keeping your electric vehicle as warm as possible during freezing temperatures. A common way to do this is plugging your vehicle in at night during the winter โ keeping the battery in its optimal temperature ranges.
Plan Your Route
Before you start your journey, check local weather and traffic reports. If the roads are in poor condition, think about delaying unnecessary travel until they improve. If you must go out, be prepared for potential delays.
For long trips during predicted winter weather, consider leaving earlier or adjusting your departure time to avoid traveling during the worst part of the storm.
Get familiar with your directions and maps before you leave, even if youโre using GPS. Share your route and expected arrival time with others. On longer drives, plan enough breaks to stretch, grab a meal, check your phone, and switch drivers or take a rest if you feel tired.
Year-Round Safety
Check for Recalls
Use NHTSAโs Recalls Look-up Tool to enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) and quickly find out if there are any critical safety issues that need to be fixed. Learn how to get these repairs done for free. You can also download NHTSAโs SaferCar app and enter your vehicle and equipment details. If thereโs a recall, youโll receive an alert on your phone.
Remember the basics: Donโt text or drive distracted, follow speed limits, and always drive sober.
Avoid Risky Driving Behaviors
Remember the basics: Donโt text or drive distracted, follow speed limits, and always drive sober. Alcohol and drugs can impair your ability to drive safely by affecting coordination, judgment, perception, and reaction time. And donโt forget: always wear your seat belt.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and many Oregonians will be hitting the roads to visit family and friends. Wet, snowy, and unpredictable weather could quickly turn travel plans upside down if youโre not prepared.
Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) crews will be out working through the holidayโplowing snow, clearing debris, managing traffic and responding to weather impacts. Theyโre doing everything they can to help keep Oregonians moving safely. But with traffic increasing and winter conditions setting in, we need travelers to do their part too.ย
Weโre seeing more close calls between vehicles and highway workers. Please slow down, be patient, and give crews plenty of room whether theyโre plowing, flagging traffic or doing emergency response work. Everyone deserves to make it home safely, including road crews.
Tips for safe winter travel this holiday week:
Expect delays. Thanksgiving travel is busy, no matter the weather. Plan ahead and allow extra time.
Watch message signs. They provide critical updates about the road aheadโchain requirements, weather hazards, and delays.
Prepare for winter driving. Carry chains and know how to use them. Pack water, snacks, warm clothes, blankets, medications, and anything youโd need if traffic slows to a crawl.
Drive for conditions. Rain, snow, fog, or heavy trafficโslow down and leave more space between vehicles.
Give snowplows room. Never pass a plow on the right. The safest place to be in a snowstorm is behind the plow.
Choose a sober, focused, and alert driver. Holiday meals and long days can make you drowsyโdonโt drive tired.
Watch for people walking and biking. Visibility drops in winter weather and early darkness.
Most construction work will pause over the holiday weekend, but some work zones remain in place. Please obey all posted signs and give workers space.
November 1 marked the start of Oregonโs studded tire season, but ODOT encourages drivers to consider other traction options that offer equal or better grip and cause less damage to roads. Modern traction tires and chains can perform just as well in icy and snowy conditions.

If youโve spent much time on the Interstate, you already know the golden rule of road trips: a good stop can make your day, and a bad one can ruin your schedule, your mood, or both. Thatโs why Walmartโs move to expand its fuel and convenience offerings along major routes in 34 states is worth your attention as a highway traveler.
Over the next few years, Walmart plans to build a network of fuel stations paired with modern convenience stores adjacent to many of its Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, with an eye toward locations close to Interstate exits and key regional corridors. For drivers, that could mean one more reliable option for fueling up, grabbing food, and restocking road-trip essentials at a familiar brand.
What Walmart Is Building
Walmart already operates or partners with fuel stations at many of its existing stores. The new push goes further: larger, stand-alone convenience stores with expanded food and beverage choices, better restrooms, and more services specifically geared toward motorists.
Hereโs what the typical site is expected to include:
Multiple fueling lanes for gasoline, with select locations offering diesel
A modern cโstore with hot and cold grabโandโgo meals, snacks, and drinks
Clean, well-lit restrooms maintained to big-box retail standards
Extended hours, with many locations aiming for late-night or 24โhour operation
In some markets, Walmart is also exploring EV charging partnerships, which could put fast chargers in the same parking lots where you buy groceries and fuel.
Why This Matters for Interstate Travelers
For anyone who spends long stretches on I-5, Iโ10, Iโ75, Iโ80, Iโ95, or other major routes, stop quality matters as much as stop frequency. Walmart is betting that travelers value consistency, price, and convenience.
Key advantages for road trippers:
1. One-stop โmega breakโ Instead of making separate stops for fuel, food, and a forgotten toiletry, you can often do everything in one place: gas at the forecourt, snacks and drinks in the cโstore, and a wider range of itemsโlike a cooler, a rain jacket, or a pack of socksโinside the main Walmart store.
2. Leveraging Walmart pricing While fuel prices will still vary by market, Walmartโs brand is built on competing hard on cost. The presence of a Walmart station at a busy exit can put downward pressure on nearby fuel prices. And if you walk into the main store, grocery and travel-item prices are often lower than at typical travel plazas.
3. Familiarity and predictability On a cross-country run through unfamiliar towns, a known chain can be reassuring. Walmartโs move adds another predictable option alongside the major truck stop and travel plaza brands you already know.
Where Youโll See Them
The rollout covers 34 states, heavily concentrated along major travel corridors. Expect the densest clusters in:
The Southeast (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas)
Texas and the Gulf Coast
The Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri)
Key Western routes (Arizona, New Mexico, parts of California and Nevada)
Most new sites will be near existing Supercenters close to Interstate exits or major U.S. highways, making them easy on/easy off stops when youโre watching both time and fuel range.
What This Means for Different Types of Travelers
Family road trips: Parents may appreciate the combination of cheaper groceries, access to a full store, and reasonably priced fuel. A longer โreset stopโ at a Walmart complex can cover bathrooms, lunch, a few minutes in the toy aisle, and a restock of snacks in one go.
Solo and business travelers: Fast in-and-out convenience is key. The new cโstores aim to offer quicker fuel islands and grabโandโgo food choicesโuseful when youโre trying to make time between cities.
RV owners and vanlifers: Walmart is already part of many RV itineraries, often as an overnight parking option where allowed. Adding more fuel and convenience locationsโplus possible future EV and RV-friendly servicesโcould make certain exits even more appealing as multi-purpose stops.
Professional drivers: While these sites wonโt replace full-scale truck plazas, drivers of smaller commercial vehicles and hotshot rigs will likely welcome another place to fuel, pick up supplies, and park for a break.
As this network builds out, youโll see more Walmart-branded canopies joining the familiar mix of truck stops and travel centers along the Interstate. For travelers who value a recognizable name, consistent prices, and the ability to get nearly anything in one stop, Walmartโs push into fuel and convenience could quietly become a fixture of your long-haul routine.

Oregon and Washington moved one step closer to replacing the aging I-5 Interstate Bridge after signing agreements with the four river users identified as being affected by a proposed fixed-span bridge across the Columbia River.
These agreements paved the way for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to submit an updated Navigation Impact Report on behalf of the Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) Program to the U.S. Coast Guard proposing a fixed-span bridge of 116 feet vertical navigation clearance. This is a critical milestone towards receiving a bridge clearance permit to replace the functionally obsolete 108-year-old Interstate Bridge connecting the two states.
A replacement fixed-span bridge would continue to provide access for 99% of river traffic, while removing the stoplight on I-5 to improve safety and reliability for roadway commerce, vehicles and transit. The impacts to identified river users have now been mitigated through the agreements. There is strong regional and community support that a fixed-span bridge would best address the needs of all users.
A new movable span would perpetuate the same issues travelers experience with the existing movable bridge, including travel delays, reduced freight mobility and a high crash rate. Based on past estimates without accounting for inflation, construction of a movable span bridge would cost approximately half a billion dollars more (in 2022 dollars) than a fixed span and would cost $1 million more per year to operate and maintain. By comparison, these agreements totaling $140 million represent a more cost-effective solution to advance the IBR Program to construction. Payments will only be made if the Coast Guard permits a fixed-span bridge and construction begins.
Next steps include the Coast Guard reviewing the information provided in the Programโs updated NIR. The Coast Guard will then hold a 30-day navigation comment period for river users and review those comments. At the conclusion of these steps, the states are hopeful that the Coast Guard will issue a revised Preliminary Navigation Clearance Determination for a fixed-span bridge. The Coast Guardโs decision is expected in early 2026.
Following this process, the Programโs federal lead agencies in the environmental review process โ the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration โ can issue an Amended Record of Decision approving the Program to move into construction.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reports that work will return to the northbound lanes of I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge as early as Friday, January 9, 2026, marking the start of months-long lane reductions. Crews will be working 24/7 to complete this work as quickly as possible. This next phase of theย Revive I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Preservationย project, builds on work that began in 2025 and continues through 2027. Crews are repairing and resurfacing the upper bridge deck, replacing concrete and aging bridge expansion joints, improving drainage and addressing other maintenance issues.ย
Contractor crews working for WSDOT will close northbound I-5 from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street for a full weekend to set up the work zone in the two left northbound I-5 lanes across the bridge, currently projected as January 9-12 if weather permits. Once the work zone is in place, the Ship Canal Bridge will re-open to two lanes for bridge deck repair and resurface work until another weekend-long full northbound I-5 closure in early June.
All lanes of I-5 will be open during the 2026 FIFA World Cup games in Seattle. A weekend-long full northbound I-5 closure will occur between June 5-8, 2026, to remove the work zone. After the final World Cup game in Seattle, Revive I-5 will return the weekend of July 10-13, 2026, with another weekend-long full northbound I-5 closure to set up a new work zone in the two right northbound I-5 lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge that will last through the end of 2026. Many factors can impact the timeline on a major construction project, including weather. The goal is to complete work on northbound I-5 by the end of 2026. The final year of the project in 2027 will focus on southbound I-5.
2026 Revive I-5 schedule
As early as January 9-12: weekend-long full closure of northbound I-5 (work zone set up).
As early as January 12-June 5: months-long two left northbound I-5 lane reduction across the Ship Canal Bridge.
June 5-8: weekend-long full closure of northbound I-5 (work zone removal).
June 8-July 10: all lanes of I-5 reopened for FIFA World Cup games.
July 10-13: weekend-long full closure of northbound I-5 (work zone set up).
July 13-end of 2026: months-long two right northbound I-5 lane reduction across the Ship Canal Bridge.
End of 2026: weekend-long full closure of northbound I-5 (work zone removal).
Weekend-long full closures for work zone set up or removal are weather dependent. Crews need dry weather to re-stripe lanes. That means if the weather is too rainy, crews will reschedule work for the following weekend.
I-5 Express Lanesย
Express lanes will run northbound-only, 24 hours a day during directional closures and lane reductions for Revive I-5. Those traveling on I-5 to or through Seattle may experience traffic delays as the express lanes will not be switching to southbound like they typically do in the morning hours. Keeping express lanes northbound-only allows WSDOT to balance the system during this work.ย
About the Revive I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project|
Contractor crews will be working 24/7 within the permit limits on the Ship Canal Bridge, which is currently Washington stateโs largest preservation effort. This critical bridge, one of the busiest stretches of I-5 with almost 240,000 vehicles traveling across the bridge each day, hasnโt seen a major preservation effort in over 40 years. Repairing and resurfacing the Ship Canal Bridge deck over the next two years is vital to extending the life of the bridge and ensuring this economic backbone of the state is in good working condition for decades to come.
