The Washington State Department of Transportation reports the following traffic impacts on Interstate 5 in the Olympic Region this week.

These projects lay the foundation for new HOV lanes on I-5 in Tacoma and northbound into Fife. Projects are located on I-5 near the Tacoma Dome between M St. to Portland Ave. from milepost 132.8 to 135.2, and northbound I-5 between East Portland Avenue and Port of Tacoma Road.

Lane closures
To continue work to demolish the McKinley Way overpass, all northbound I-5 traffic will be temporarily rerouted during night hours as listed below:

12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. through Friday, Sept. 9, and
1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10

  • All lanes of northbound I-5 near South 38th Street will be rerouted onto the parallel northbound I-5 collector/distributor and detoured via either State Route 7 or Interstate 705.
Drivers can expect additional weeknight single- and double-lane closures in both directions of I-5 between M Street and the Port of Tacoma Road. Single-lane closures begin at 8 p.m.; double lane closures begin at 9 p.m. All lanes reopen by 6 a.m. the following weekday morning, and at 7 a.m. on Saturdays.

Ramp closures
